Mavericks Invitational 2014

Big waves! Surfers converged at San Mateo County coast on Friday to take part on the 2014 Mavericks Invitational.

The 24 competitors rode hundreds of yards off Pillar Point, spectators watched on live feed on big screens since the surfers were out of view.

Mavericks is in Northern California, USA. It is located approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) from shore outside Pillar Point Harbor, just north of the town of Half Moon Bay at the village of Princeton-by-the-Sea. After a strong winter storm in the northern Pacific Ocean, waves can routinely crest at over 25 feet (7.6 m) and top out at over 80 feet (24 m). The break is caused by an unusually shaped underwater rock formation.

Daniel Garland, a San Francisco resident and a surfer said "I wanted to come down and watch these guys surf waves that I'm not brave enough to try."

Two big-name surfers have died at the break Mark Foo of Northern California in 1994, and Hawaiian Sion Milosky in 2011.
