Cancelled Triathlon Organized by BoneIslandTri is Back

BoneIslandTri organized a race then canceled the full race due to financial problems. However, athletes went online to express their dissappointment and disgust, now it seems the scheduled race is back on. It is set on Januaray 25, 2013 in Key West. It is a 140.6-mile race.

The organizer announced last Thursday on their Facebook page that they have not attracted enough athletes for the race and that they are canceling the full race and moving it to July 2015.

"BoneIslandTri will still move the 2015 date to July as we have had a difficult financial loss trying to create an event in January for full athletes."

On their website, they have announced that the full distance event is re-instated:

"The BoneIslandTri Full-Distance event will still be held this January 25, 2013.  We will be making changes to the course to keep both events for all athletes. Thank you for all of your comments and feedback."

Insurance for Triathletes

injury

Triathlon is an extreme sport that can take a lot from the athletes and it is done outdoors where a lot of things can happen like accidents. In events like this, insurance are important not just for the organizers but also the athletes participating in the event.

If you are a triathlete and you got injured in an event that is sanctioned by the USA Triathlon, you are covered by their insurance that can help you with the expenses.

You can simply apply for the USAT Excess Medical Coverage, this means you are eligible to submit claims that are over and above what your own medical insurance covers. A deductible does apply for this excess coverage.

Follow these steps if you wish to file a claim:
    1. Complete the USAT Medical Claim form.  The race director can provide the form or email sanction@usatriathlon.org for one.
    2. Follow the directions on the second page of the USAT Medical Claim form carefully.  Submit the requested information to the address.

More than 200 compete in triathlon festival in rain

triathlon, marathon, sports

WORTH TWP — More than 200 participants show up at Saturday's Mighty Moraine Man Triathlon Festival despite of heavy rains.

The event which was held at Moraine State Park featured a Half-Ironman race — which is a 1.2 mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride and a 13.1 mile run — and an Olympic distance triathlon — which is a .9-mile swim, a 27-mile bike ride and a 6.2-mile run.

Joella Baker, race director, said rain can slow racers down, particularly when biking. She said that one person quit the race because the rain was too heavy and some people had mechanical problems with their bicycles.
But most racers stuck it out.

“Despite the rain, it's going very well,” Baker said.

This was the first time for the event, which had the first Half-Ironman ever in Western Pennsylvania. The park has made a five-year commitment to hold the event.

Racers swam in Lake Arthur. The bike course took racers outside the park and up toward Slippery Rock, while the running was on trails in the park.

The races were designed for both beginners and experienced competitors. Baker said she was amazed by the number of beginners who attended.
