Strong Traithlon Start by Pete Jacobs

The defending champion from Australia Pete Jacobs had a strong start in the Hawaiian Ironman triathlon world championships. He came out second in the 3.8km ocean swim behind American Brandon Marsh and had the lead by the time they were out of transition and onto the 180km bike ride.

Andy Starykowicz from the US was able to snatch the lead from Jacobs within a few kilometres of the cycle race.

Haley Chura of USA led the women in swimming 53:55, seven seconds ahead of Great Britain's Jodie Swallow.
